Before she was called a matriarch, she was a daughter. Before she became a grandmother, she learned from the women before her. Every generation carried something forward.
Melungeon Matriarch™ begins with my maternal lineage—a Melungeon bloodline rooted in the Appalachian Mountains. Through the women of my family, I inherited not only my heritage, but also a lineage of Appalachian rootworkers and healers whose knowledge, resilience, and stewardship were faithfully carried from one generation to the next.
The women of my maternal line understood the land. They knew the value of its herbs and roots, cared for their households, tended to those in need, and passed their knowledge to the generations that followed. Their wisdom was practical, their faith unwavering, and their lives marked by service. That legacy continues to shape who I am and the work I have been called to do.
Their voices did not end with their passing.
They made one thing unmistakably clear: Never allow anyone to shrink who I am. Never allow religion, fear, or the opinions of others to define the gifts, talents, and abilities the Most High placed within me.
They walked through seasons when much of what they carried had to remain hidden. They endured misunderstanding, rejection, and silence so that I could live openly in the calling the Most High has entrusted to me. They walked so that I could run—not for my own recognition, but so that the work of peace, protection, restoration, and healing would continue through the generations.
That charge became part of my calling.
The Appalachian Mountains are more than the backdrop of my family's story—they are part of my inheritance. They are the mountains where generations of my maternal family lived, worked, gathered herbs, cared for their communities, and learned to live in harmony with the land that sustained them.
Whenever possible, I intentionally seek herbs with a connection to the Appalachian region because they reflect both the landscape that shaped my family and the traditions that were faithfully preserved by the women who came before me.
